Calathea Care

Light: Calatheas thrive in bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can scorch their leaves, leading to browning and wilting. A north or east-facing window is ideal, but if natural light is limited, fluorescent lighting can also support their growth.

Watering: These plants prefer consistently moist soil. Water them when the top inch of soil feels dry but avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot. Use distilled or rainwater, as Calatheas are sensitive to chemicals found in tap water.

Humidity: Calatheas flourish in high humidity environments, ideally between 50% to 70%. Increase humidity levels by misting the leaves regularly, placing a pebble tray with water beneath the pot, or using a humidifier.

Temperature: Maintain a temperature range of 18°C to 24°C. Calatheas are sensitive to chilly drafts and sudden temperature changes, so keep them away from open windows and heating vents.

Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix that retains moisture. A mix of potting soil, perlite, and peat can provide the necessary drainage and aeration for healthy root growth.

Fertilising: During the growing season (spring and summer), feed your Calathea with a balanced fertiliser every 4-6 weeks. Reduce or eliminate fertilisation during autumn and winter when growth slows.

Repotting: Calatheas should be repotted every couple of years or when their roots outgrow the pot. Choose a container that is only slightly larger than the current one to prevent excess moisture retention.

Pests: Regularly inspect your plant for pests such as spider mites and aphids. If noticed, treat them promptly with insecticidal soap or by wiping the affected areas with a damp cloth.

Pruning: Remove any dead or yellowing leaves to encourage new growth and maintain the plant's appearance. Use clean, sharp scissors to avoid damaging healthy foliage.
