Ficus Elastica Care
Light Requirements
Ficus elastica, commonly known as the rubber plant, thrives in bright, indirect light. While it can tolerate lower light conditions, its growth may slow and the leaves may lose their vibrancy. Avoid direct sunlight, as this can scorch the leaves.
Watering
Water the rubber plant when the top inch of the soil feels dry. Typically, this will be every 1-2 weeks. Ensure that the pot has good drainage to prevent waterlogging, which can lead to root rot. During the growing season (spring and summer), the plant may require more frequent watering.
Humidity
Ficus elastica prefers moderate to high humidity levels. If your home has dry air, particularly in the winter months, consider misting the leaves or placing a humidifier nearby. Regularly wiping the leaves with a damp cloth can also help maintain humidity and remove dust.
Temperature
Maintain a temperature range of 16-27°C (60-80°F). Avoid placing the plant in drafty areas or near heating vents, as sudden temperature changes can stress the plant.
Soil
A well-draining potting mix is essential for Ficus elastica. A mix designed for houseplants or a combination of potting soil, perlite, and orchid bark works well.
Fertilising
Feed your rubber plant with a balanced liquid fertiliser every 4-6 weeks during the growing season. Reduce feeding during the dormant months in winter.
Pruning
Pruning can help maintain the shape of the rubber plant and encourage bushier growth. Remove any dead or yellowing leaves and trim back long stems as needed.
Repotting
Repot the plant every 2-3 years or when it becomes root-bound. Choose a pot that is one size larger and refresh the soil to provide nutrients.
Pests and Problems
Watch for common pests such as spider mites, mealybugs, and scale. If you notice any infestations, treat them promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Yellowing leaves may indicate overwatering, while brown tips can be a sign of under-watering or low humidity.
By following these care guidelines, your Ficus elastica can thrive and become a striking addition to your indoor plant collection.
