Opuntia, commonly known as prickly pear, is a genus of cacti renowned for its flat pads and vibrant fruits. Proper care ensures these hardy plants thrive. Below are guidelines for maintaining healthy Opuntia:

Light Requirements

• Sunlight: Opuntia thrives in full sun. Aim for at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Insufficient light can lead to weak growth and reduced flowering.

Watering

• Frequency: Water sparingly. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. During the active growing season (spring and summer), watering every 2 to 3 weeks is appropriate. In winter, reduce watering further.

• Method: When watering, flood the pot and let excess water drain. Avoid getting water on the pads to prevent rot.

Soil

• Type: Use a well-draining cactus mix or create your own by combining potting soil with sand and perlite in equal parts. This ensures good aeration and drainage.

Temperature and Humidity

• Temperature: Opuntia prefers warm temperatures, ideally between 21°C to 32°C (70°F to 90°F) during the day. They can tolerate lower temperatures in winter, typically above 10°C (50°F).

• Humidity: They prefer low humidity levels, which is ideal for their growth. Avoid overly humid environments to reduce the risk of rot.

Fertilising

• Frequency: Fertilise during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced cactus fertiliser every 4 to 6 weeks. Avoid fertilising during the dormant winter months.

Pruning

• Removal of Pads: Prune any dead or damaged pads to encourage new growth. Use gloves to avoid needles. Sterilise utensils before use to prevent disease.

Pests and Diseases

• Common Pests: Watch for scale insects and mealybugs. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or by wiping the pads with a cotton ball dipped in alcohol.

• Diseases: Root rot is common in over-watered conditions. Ensure adequate drainage and avoid waterlogging the roots.

Repotting

• Frequency: Repot every 2 to 3 years to refresh soil and provide space for growth. Choose a pot with drainage holes and use the appropriate cactus mix.

Propagation

• Method: Opuntia can be propagated from pads. Cut a healthy pad and allow it to callous for several days before placing it into well-draining soil. Water sparingly until roots develop.
